Tartans are most commonly associated with the Celtic culture and peoples, but over time, there are tartans that have been designed for peoples from America , the Bahamas , Canada , Germany , Holland , Italy , Spain , Japan and Korea not to mention almost every American state and EVERY ONE of the Irish Counties or Districts. In fact, many of the Irish District tartans are among the most colorful and attractive tartan designs.

It has been estimated that anywhere from 7 to 23 million Americans are either Scottish or “Scotch-Irish”, according to the 2000 census. It has also been estimated that there are almost 5,000 tartan designs, and many of them are “Universal” designs, which means that they have no specific family association, and therefore are intended for use by anyone.
